JHS recognized this need and brings the latest procedures and advanced medicine to you right here where you live. We have recruited the best specialists and surgeons as well as highly trained specialized nursing staff to handle the most complex lung treatment cases.
The Lung Center at JHS is designed to provide complete evaluation, treatment and care for patients with diseases of the thoracic area, including lung and esophageal cancer. Jameson Lung Center blends the professional services of a team of specialists which include thoracic surgeons, general surgeons, pulmonologists, medical and radiation oncologists, pathologists, nursing personnel and the patient’s primary care physician to provide comprehensive diagnostic, surgical, follow-up and rehabilitation care.
Becoming a Patient
Following referral from the patient’s primary care physician (PCP), patients are evaluated by pulmonologists and thoracic surgeons. All diagnostic testing, as well as complete pre-operative and post-operative services, is coordinated through Jameson Lung Center.
The surgical team consists of Rodney Landreneau, M.D., Brian Pettiford, M.D. and Joseph Wizorek, M.D. They are supported by pulmonologists, Bassem Srour, M.D., Rohit Mehta, M.D., Mohammad I. Ali, M.D. and Ramesh Kaul, M.D., along with a long list of medical professionals in every area of support. Rehabilitation and follow-up services are also available through a Pulmonary Rehabilitation program for patients with asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
Joseph J. Wizorek, M.D.
Joseph J. Wizorek, M.D., Board Certified Thoracic Surgeon, is a graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, DC. He served internship and residency in surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He completed his research fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. His fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery was at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals in Milwaukee.
Radiofrequency Ablation Procedure
RFA, radiofrequency ablation, is a useful alternative treatment for patients with early stage lung cancer who are unable to undergo conventional lung surgery. The procedure is done using CT guidance where a small needle electrode is inserted through the skin directly into the tumor tissue. Radiofrequency energy is then passed through the electrode causing the tissue around the electrode to heat up killing cancer cells. Correct settings ensure that the heat will destroy all the tumor cells but very little of the surrounding normal lung tissue.
